Announcement of New Dean of the Graduate Division

November 20, 2014

I am pleased to announce that, following a campus-wide search, Professor Fiona Doyle has accepted appointment to the position of Dean of the Graduate Division.  Fiona will begin her new role on January 1, 2015.  She brings an abundance of campus leadership experience to this position, as well as extensive administrative experience in her many roles at the College of Engineering.  As the Chancellor and I believe that the importance of fundraising will only grow, she will also bring strengths in this crucial area, building on the excellent work of her predecessors in the Graduate Division.

Fiona began her career on the Berkeley campus as an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Mineral Engineering in 1983, was tenured in 1988, and has been the Donald H. McLaughlin Professor of Mineral Engineering since 1998.  She has served in many leadership capacities, including as Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and as Acting Dean of the College of Engineering, and as Chair of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate.  She currently serves as Executive Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, and as Chief Academic Officer of the Berkeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore, leading the Singapore-Berkeley Research Initiative for Sustainable Energy.  Among other responsibilities in the College of Engineering, Fiona oversees Engineering Student Services, which provides comprehensive support and advising to undergraduates, and she currently serves as Interim Director of the new Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation.

I want to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of Professor Rosemary Joyce, who has served as Interim Dean of Graduate Division since July 1, 2014. Rosemary set aside numerous professional and personal commitments to take on the role of Interim Dean, and the Chancellor and I are very grateful to her for doing so. She has agreed to  continue as an Associate Dean of the Graduate Division during spring 2015, before taking up a long-planned residence with the UCDC program in fall 2015.  It is difficult to imagine how the campus would have navigated the past six months without Rosemary’s expertise, commitment, and leadership.

Please join me in thanking Rosemary for her service and welcoming Fiona to her new position.

Sincerely,

Claude M. Steele

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
