Campus Training Review Board (CTR)

What is the Campus Training Review Board?

The CTR Board reviews proposals to assign new required training modules to campus employees. The scope of the Board are modules in the UC Berkeley campus learning management system. Many educational modules exist in this system. Some are there for anyone to explore at their own discretion; others are “assigned”, either as recommended or required, to individuals in specific job categories. Required trainings are expected to be completed as part of the job duties of an employee. (For more information, see People & Culture’s Foundational Skills-Required Training website)

The role of the CTR Board is to review proposals that would assign modules as “required” for employees. The Board was created in order to provide some central advisory oversight over broad-based training assignments and to provide a transparent process for those seeking to develop and assign a new training module.

Required Training Proposal Process + Timeline

Campus units seeking to propose a new training module to be assigned as "required" to individuals in specific job categories via the UC Berkeley campus learning management system (LMS - UC Learning Center) must submit a proposal to the Campus Training Review (CTR) Board.

The CTR Board will review the proposal and make a recommendation to the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP), who have the final decision whether a proposed training should be required, recommended, or neither. To start the process, please follow these steps:

  1. Save a copy of the “New Training Module Proposal Form” template to your own desktop/files and complete all lines of the form.

  2. Submit the form for review by the CTR Board by the 15th of the month to ensure review at an upcoming Board meeting. The Board meets once monthly.

  3. The CTR Board may invite you and your proposal team to provide a brief presentation about the proposed training.

  4. Once the Board has reviewed your proposal materials and, if needed, has an opportunity to hear directly from you, they will send their recommendations to senior campus leadership within two business weeks. A copy of their recommendation will be shared with you.

*Note that it may take up to two months to undergo the review process, between submitting a completed proposal form and the Board rendering a recommendation.

  5. Once the Chancellor and EVCP have made a final decision, the CTR Board will follow up with you and your proposal team to facilitate next steps, as needed.

A completed “New Training Module Proposal Form” and any questions about the form, process, and timeline may be directed to CRTR Board staff Sumali Tuchrello (sumali@berkeley.edu).
