The University of California, Berkeley invites nominations and applications for the position of Executive Dean of the College of Letters & Science, with an intended start date of July 1, 2021.
The Executive Dean of the College of Letters and Science (EDLS) holds a critical leadership position on the Berkeley campus. As part of a transition to new leadership in 2021, the EDLS will become a dedicated full-time position with a re-envisioned scope: advancing the core identity and mission of the college and providing leadership for undergraduate education. This re-envisioned EDLS position deepens Berkeley’s commitment to an undergraduate education that is distinguished by its excellence and breadth and that is responsive to the rapidly shifting social, economic, environmental, and technological challenges our students will face in the years ahead.
The role of the EDLS will encompass three main areas:

Envisioning the future of undergraduate education in L&S, and elevating diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in all aspects of the undergraduate experience

Leadership of the L&S Division of Undergraduate Studies

Advocacy, fundraising and administration for the college
The EDLS reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) and plays a leadership and coordinating role in partnership with the divisional deans of the college. The re-envisioned EDLS includes leadership of the Division of Undergraduate Studies and the position of Dean of the Undergraduate Division is being eliminated. The EDLS supervises the L&S Assistant Executive Dean, who in turn oversees college administration.
Candidates should possess the following qualifications

A current member of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate, holding tenure, at the rank of Professor or under review for promotion to the rank of Professor.

Demonstrated success in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

A record of commitment to undergraduate education, and a commitment to engage with undergraduate students and student leadership to inform and guide critical decisions and educational policy.

A thoughtful and inspiring conception of the role and value of foundational research, comprehensive graduate training, and a broad, liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education

Demonstrated success in, or an aptitude for, building strong relationships with alumni and donors and inspiring philanthropic giving.

Leadership experience at Berkeley, for example, as a department chair, institute director, or Academic Senate committee chair.

A highly collaborative approach to developing initiatives and solving problems, and a commitment to transparent communication and broad engagement with stakeholders.

Experience with data-informed analysis, or a readiness to use it as appropriate.
