Search Announcement and Update: University Librarian

September 6, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

I write to provide an update on the search for our next University Librarian (UL). The UL serves as the Library’s chief administrative officer and executive, reporting directly to the executive vice chancellor and provost. In addition to providing overall leadership for the Library, the UL’s administrative responsibilities include oversight of the Library’s personnel, budgets, fundraising, collection management and development, and internal and external partnerships.

Jennifer Johnson-Hanks, Executive Dean of the College of Letters & Science, is serving as the chair of the search advisory committee. The committee, which convened in mid-August, is currently holding multiple stakeholder-listening sessions to gather feedback and insights regarding the challenges, opportunities, and priorities for the position, as well as the qualities and characteristics desired in the next UL. We have also maintained an online survey. Many thanks to those of you who have provided input already. In addition to listening sessions, we continue to welcome feedback from the campus community through the online survey, which will be open for the duration of the search; all responses to the survey are anonymous.

The search team has synthesized the information received through the listening sessions and the online survey. It has now produced a detailed UL leadership profile. Please feel free to share this profile broadly. In addition, the search firm will use this information to reach out to potential candidates. It is important that we build a strong and diverse pool of qualified candidates. We encourage you to reach out to the search firm, WittKieffer, atBerkeleyUniversityLibrarian@wittkieffer.com if you have questions and/or would like to submit candidate nominations.

This search process is following the standard process of all Senior Management Group (SMG) searches, including the need for Regental approval once a finalist is selected.

Please read the job announcement, including the leadership profile, timeline, and search advisory committee list on the EVCP websiteQuestions may be referred to our campus’s SMG search manager, Kristine Lee Wilby

Sincerely,

Benjamin E. Hermalin
Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost
