Associate Vice Chancellor of Information Technology & Chief Information Officer (2023)

UC Berkeley is organizing a search for its next Associate Vice Chancellor for Information & Technology & Chief Information Officer. The search will be chaired by Ben Hermalin, Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost, and Marc Fisher, Vice Chancellor, Administration.

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO) is the senior-most technology officer at UC Berkeley and is responsible for providing the strategic vision for Information Technology (IT) campus-wide through the oversight of Berkeley IT (bIT) and the collaborative leadership of partner IT organizations in other divisions and schools. Reporting jointly to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) and the Vice Chancellor for Administration (VCA) at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), the CIO advises campus leadership on IT matters and works with them in shaping UC Berkeley’s strategy around IT.

The dual-reporting structure for the CIO reflects the centrality of IT to all aspects of UC Berkeley’s academic mission and its business operations. The CIO has both a direct and indirect influence on the education, research, and public service mission of the University. The CIO has, working with the IT community, responsibility for strengthening infrastructure to support education and research, strategically planning ahead to tackle higher education issues through technology, and increasing operational efficiency through data and digital solutions.

Estimated timeline: the outreach and initial screening should occur in the summer and the search committee panel interviews should occur in the late summer / early fall.

Stakeholder engagement listening sessions & Search survey

The Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost (EVCP), Vice Chancellor for Administration (VCA), and Berkeley Executive Search (BES) met with various campus executives and stakeholders to bIT in a series of listening sessions in April and May of 2023. This was to understand the campus’ priorities for bIT including gathering perspective and feedback from bIT staff at various levels. The information will help BES in conversations with prospective candidates and help the EVCP, VCA, and the search committee maintain alignment on the campus priorities to the interview process.

To ensure that BES and the search committee are receiving broad feedback from bIT staff and the campus community, anyone who would like to offer information for consideration may also do so via the search survey: https://forms.gle/i2iKYfAPXQ5qZ8b17

The survey will remain open throughout the search. Information received by early May helped inform edits of the position description. BES will ensure that the results of the survey are made available to the search chairs and search committee throughout the search.
