Announcement: Dean of the Haas School of Business

June 16, 2025

Dear campus community,

After a successful national search, we are pleased to announce that Jennifer Chatman, interim dean of the Haas School of Business, has been appointed to serve as the next dean. Professor Chatman will continue in her current role until her permanent appointment becomes effective on July 1, 2025.

A distinguished scholar in organizational behavior and a Berkeley faculty member for more than three decades, Professor Chatman brings immense experience to this leadership role. The Paul J. Cortese Distinguished Professor of Management and the co-founder and co-director of the Berkeley Center for Workplace Culture and Innovation, Professor Chatman is internationally recognized for her pioneering research on organizational culture and leadership. She was instrumental in developing and implementing Haas'sDefining Leadership Principles which have become central to Haas's culture and operations.

Before her appointment as interim dean, Professor Chatman previously served as Haas’s associate dean of academic affairs, as its associate dean of learning strategies, and in other key leadership roles at the school. She has also made significant contributions to the campus through her work in the Academic Senate, including serving as a member of the Divisional Council (DIVCO), the Committee on Committees (COMS), and a number of other committees.

Since assuming the interim dean position in 2024, she has driven swift and significant progress toward making Haas materially stronger financially. She has also led efforts to refine the school’s philanthropic strategy by strengthening support for scholarships, fellowships, faculty research, and innovative academic programs. Professor Chatman has brought a renewed focus to the Haas Advisory Board, launching a strategy and growth committee and ensuring alignment between board engagement and institutional goals. Her corporate governance experience as an independent director on a public company board and as an advisor to Fortune 500 firms continues to inform her thoughtful and strategic leadership.

A “Double Bear,” Professor Chatman earned both her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her Ph.D. in business administration from UC Berkeley. As dean, she will continue to focus on strengthening Haas’s financial foundation, enhancing the student experience, supporting faculty excellence, and advancing Haas’s reputation as a global leader in business education rooted in Berkeley’s public mission.
