Dear campus community,
We are delighted to announce that Laura D’Andrea Tyson has agreed to serve as the Interim Dean of the Haas School of Business effective July 1, 2018. Laura previously served as Dean of the Haas School from 1998 to 2001, instituting many changes that helped propel Haas into the upper echelons of American business schools. She subsequently served as the successful Dean of the London Business School from 2002 to 2006. At the end of her term as London Business School Dean, she returned to the Berkeley faculty. Laura currently serves as the Faculty Director of the Institute for Business & Social Impact at Haas and as the Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley.
Laura first joined the Berkeley faculty in 1977. A prominent economist, Laura has been influential both in terms of scholarship and public policy, as reflected, among other honors, in her being made a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Laura is also a gifted teacher, having been a recipient of the campus’s Distinguished Teaching Award. She was an economic advisor in the Clinton administration, both as the Chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1993 to 1995 and as the Director of the National Economic Council from 1995 to 1996. Laura serves on three corporate boards, including two Fortune 500 companies. She also serves as an advisor to, or member of, several advisory boards for nonprofit and for-profit organizations. At the World Economic Forum, she is the co-chair of the Global Future Council on Education, Gender, and Work and is a Stewardship Board member of the System Initiative on Education, Gender and Work.
We continue to work on recruiting a permanent dean for Haas and hope to have a new dean named and in place this fall. Laura has graciously agreed to serve until at least the end of the calendar year if need be.
We again thank Rich Lyons for his remarkable service as Haas Dean for the past 11 years. Rich will return to his full-time faculty position next year following a well-deserved sabbatical. Although he is a truly hard act to follow, we are confident that Laura will prove a worthy successor, if only on a temporary basis.
