Announcement: interim dean of Haas School of Business

July 10, 2024

Dear Campus Leaders and the Haas School of Business Community,

We are pleased to announce that Jennifer A. Chatman has been selected to serve as interim dean of the Haas School of Business starting August 1, 2024. Professor Chatman is the Paul J. Cortese Distinguished Professor of Management and a former associate dean for academic affairs at the Haas School of Business.

Professor Chatman earned both her BA in psychology and her PhD in business administration at UC Berkeley. A renowned organizational psychologist, she studies how organizational culture, group norms, leadership, and group composition influence behavior. In 2023, the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management recognized her exceptional contributions with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Nine of her research papers have won awards. Professor Chatman has shared her expertise on organizational culture and building effective teams with some of the most innovative and successful firms through consulting services and by teaching in the Berkeley Executive Education program. Also an award-winning teacher, she has developed courses for business students in degree programs as well as non-degree executive programs focusing on leading and leveraging culture.

Professor Chatman co-founded and co-directs the Berkeley Center for Workplace Culture and Innovation with Haas colleague Professor Sameer Srivastava. Together they launched a new podcast, The Culture Kit with Jenny and Sameer, in March to help listeners build effective organizational cultures where everyone feels included.

Professor Chatman brings a wealth of leadership experience to the interim dean role. In addition to serving as associate dean for Academic Affairs, she served as associate dean for Learning Strategies, group chair, chair of Haas faculty’s Policy and Planning Committee, faculty director of the Haas Ph.D. program, and faculty chair of the Haas Executive MBA Program. In fall 2023, Professor Chatman served as the acting dean for the Haas School of Business for three months. In that capacity, she not only met with students and donors and represented Haas at events, but she also designed and presided over the fall Haas School Board meeting and hosted the Haas fundraising event, the Beyond Yourself Bash. Furthermore, Professor Chatman sustained and strengthened relationships with Haas’s campus partners.
