Announcement: University librarian

January 26, 2024

Dear Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce that Suzanne L. Wones has been selected as our next university librarian, pending final formal Regental approval. Suzanne joins us from Harvard University, where she currently serves as the associate university librarian for discovery and access. Her first day at Berkeley will be July 1, 2024.

The university librarian serves as the library’s chief executive officer. In this role, Suzanne will act as the official representative, advocate, and intellectual leader of the library and work with faculty, staff, students and library employees to create a forward-looking and collaborative vision for the future of the UC Berkeley Library.

Suzanne’s breadth of experience, proven leadership in navigating difficult organizational changes, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging make her uniquely qualified to take on the challenges and opportunities she will face in this role.

Prior to her current role, Suzanne served as associate university librarian for digital strategies and innovation. Suzanne also held progressive roles at the Harvard Law School Library, including executive director, as well as the Kennedy School of Government Library.

Suzanne earned her bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Massachusetts, master’s in American history from the University of New Hampshire, master’s in library and information sciences from the University of Michigan and completed the senior library fellows program at UCLA.

I want to thank the search advisory committee for their service and reiterate my thanks to Jeff MacKie-Mason for his substantial contributions to the university. Please join me in welcoming Suzanne to campus when she arrives this summer.

Sincerely,

Benjamin E. Hermalin
