New Data Storage Allocation for Research Faculty

September 25, 2025

To our research community,

We are pleased to announce, in response to advocacy by the Senate Committee on Computing and Information Technology (CIT) and DIVCO, that a new Data Storage Allocation will be made available to UC Berkeley research faculty by the end of the fall semester. This new allocation, along with a set of services provided by dedicated staff, will support researcher productivity, while also strengthening our research data cybersecurity posture, aligning with growing compliance requirements from funding agencies and enhancing protection of Berkeley’s intellectual property.

Storage Options

The  Data Storage Allocation willprovide Berkeley research faculty with 5 TB of storage that can be used across a set of technology services aligned with the most common use cases. These services are:

  • Collaborative Storage: File storage optimized for sharing among UC Berkeley researchers and across institutions.

  • Computational Storage: Storage designed for research used in high-performance and high-throughput computing on the Berkeley Research cluster (Savio).

  • Secure Storage: Storage designed to meet security requirements for sensitive and/or regulated research data. Leverages Berkeley Secure Research Data and Compute (SRDC) service.

  • General Purpose Storage: Storage used to house data, media, or file repositories for use by the owner with minimal sharing.

  • Data Sharing & Publishing Storage: Storage used to provide public or mediated access to data, media, or file repositories in accordance with funder or publisher requirements.

Researchers with greater needs for one or more of these offerings may use a larger fraction of their allocation on that service or use additional funds to purchase storage capacity over and above the 5 TB allocation.

Commitment & Contact

Provided collaboratively by Research IT, Berkeley IT, and the Library, the new Data Storage Allocation is being implemented as a pilot from fiscal years 2025-2027 to develop and optimize the provisioning process and determine and plan for the ongoing level of capacity required. The commitment to sustain storage provided during the pilot phase will be upheld in the transition to the resulting ongoing service. View FAQs on this project/service.

We appreciate the hard work of the CIT in advocating for these critical resources and welcome feedback from the research faculty community as we move forward. Feedback is welcome to research-storage@berkeley.edu
