Position Description

The next Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion (VCEI) will advance Berkeley’s leadership role in the field and practice of equity and inclusion by boldly establishing new paradigms and implementing strategies and tactics that embed equity and inclusion principles into the fiber of the Berkeley campus. S/he will work at both the systemic and local level to create a shared sense of responsibility for equity and inclusion among campus constituencies with the aim of positively impacting faculty, students, staff, and the overall campus climate in the near and long term.

As a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, the VCEI will facilitate institutional success by working directly with campus governing bodies, academic units, and other departments, and by providing leadership in support of goals that target a full range of diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, leaders, faculty, and staff. S/he will work with colleagues and stakeholders to constructively challenge and address matters of institutional climate, policies and practices. The VCEI will also lead Berkeley's efforts to cultivate financial and other resources to support effective programs and initiatives that advance the campus’s equity and inclusion goals.

The Division of Equity and Inclusion (E&I) provides leadership and accountability to address systemic inequities for all members of UC Berkeley through engaged research, teaching, and public service, and by expanding pathways for access and success and promoting a healthy and engaging campus climate. The Division delivers a range of direct service, programmatic support, and advice and consultation across all campus communities including faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, staff, and post-doctoral fellows. Annual expenses of the E&I Division total over $25 million, of which 58% are from campus and state funds, 31% from federal and state public service grants, and the remaining from philanthropy and private grants. Over 150 full- and part-time staff are employed in the Division, as are about 250 part-time student employees. Among the Division’s 40+ programs and reporting units are the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society, pre-college programs, the American Cultures teaching program, and programs serving a broad array of constituencies that include LGBTQ+ students, African American students, Chicano/Latino students, Native American students, campus veterans, disabled students, undocumented students, and transfer students.   • Applicants must be faculty members at UC Berkeley. At the time of appointment, the successful candidate must hold the rank of full professor, full adjunct professor, full professor in residence, or full teaching professor (senior lecturer with security of employment). 
  • S/he must have a distinguished record in teaching, research, and/or professional accomplishment. 
  • S/he must have experience that has prepared her/him for success in managing, leading, and influencing within complex environments. 
  • S/he needs experience in, or an aptitude for, fundraising from public and private sources, institutions, and individuals. 
  • S/he must be deeply engaged in issues of equity and inclusion in higher education.

    • The ability to represent the University externally with state and national political leaders  and with donors, thought leaders, and other stakeholders in Berkeley’s extended community.
    • The ability to listen well, assess pressing needs, and respond to students, faculty, administration, and staff.
  • Administrative Effectiveness
    • The capacity to foster, among a highly-committed equity and inclusion team, a culture that values self-examination, quality improvement, strategic thinking, mission-aligned planning and the continuous pursuit of excellence.
    • Consistency in modeling for the University an office that is accessible, transparent, responsive and relevant, and that adheres to equity and inclusion principles internally.
    • Readiness to measure repeatedly the impact of the office of E&I through the establishment of team support structures, and through setting and monitoring of high standards of accountability, partnership and delivery across the campus.
