The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), the world’s premier public university, seeks a visionary, inclusive, and strategic leader as its next Dean of the Berkeley School of Education (BSE).
The Dean will join a school with a rich history of research excellence, grounded in the social sciences, and will build upon these strengths. The Dean will also foster cutting-edge interdisciplinary and professional learning opportunities. With one of the most diverse faculty, staff, and student bodies among academic units at UC Berkeley, in a community rooted in equity and social justice, BSE is uniquely positioned to address the pressing social, economic, and educational needs of the region and beyond. The next Dean will bring together and inspire the School’s talented faculty, staff, and students to further a mission of improving educational outcomes and ensuring learning, achievement, and quality of life for all students, including those in under-resourced schools, school districts, and educational systems.
The Berkeley School of Education is one of the nation’s top-ranked schools of education, offering unparalleled scholarship and professional training that prepares future leaders of education policy, practice, and research. The BSE community includes 27 Senate faculty, and has over 65 staff and 500 students. In FY 2022, BSE had a budget of $29.7 million. The School offers a diverse range of degree and credential programs, leadership development programs, and school and community outreach initiatives. It houses numerous research as well as professional development centers.
In order to achieve new levels of success, the Dean will leverage significant strengths while addressing the following opportunities and challenges:

Sustaining and advancing the continued development of a collaborative and cohesive vision for BSE by emphasizing its deep integration of equity into its programs;

Strengthening internal community bonds while building collaborative relationships across the School and the greater University community;

Elevating the School’s academic standing and inspiring the continued excellence of faculty and staff;

Recruiting, developing and retaining exceptional faculty, staff, and students;

Growing the School’s financial resources through increasing private support, research funding and new revenue-producing programs;

Illuminating the School’s role in the local, regional, and global education community to expand BSE’s role as a leader in research, practice, and policy
The Dean will be a steadfast leader and an outspoken advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice. The capacity to be a successful fundraiser and the skills to be a strong, effective, and persuasive communicator are critical. Candidates must possess an earned doctoral degree or equivalent international degree and a record of scholarship that merits a tenured appointment at UC Berkeley at the level of full professor.
