Announcement: Chief information officer

March 15, 2023

Dear Campus Community,

It is with a mixture of sadness and pride that we share with you that Jenn Stringer, associate vice chancellor for information technology and chief information officer, will be leaving UC Berkeley at the end of June to join the J. Paul Getty Trust as vice president and chief digital officer

Jenn’s tenure has been hallmarked by her energy and her collaborative, innovative leadership style. During her ten years at Berkeley, she led the transition to the Canvas Learning Management System (bCourses), was a key leader of the design team for the Reimagining IT Strategic Plan that continues to be updated annually, and restructured and aligned the campus Research, Teaching, and Learning portfolio to create the current RTL organization. Jenn has been an instrumental leader for several UC committees and initiatives, including the nationally recognized UC work on learning data privacy. She is active professionally in EDUCAUSE, is on the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) steering committee, and was formerly the Viewpoint Editor for EDUCAUSE Review.

In her role as the campus CIO, Jenn reorganized Berkeley IT to be a more agile and strategic organization. She has passionately focused on creating a diverse organization that supports professional development and growth. She also helped develop the current IT governance structure that is successfully prioritizing investments in IT projects and services. She will truly be missed by her staff and colleagues across the campus and the UC system.

In her new role at Getty, Jenn will oversee the organization’s IT team and trust-wide strategic digital initiatives, including systems that support expansive digital art and photography collections, cultural heritage data management, and the archives of the Getty Library, the world’s largest dedicated to the visual arts and architecture.

A nationwide search for a new associate vice chancellor for information technology and chief information officer will be conducted in order to provide leadership of the critical technology services and strategy that serve all parts of our campus mission. More information about the search and interim leadership will be coming in the next few weeks.

Sincerely,

Marc Fisher
