Announcement: Interim Dean of Berkeley Law

March 22, 2016

Dear campus community,

I am writing to inform you that law professor Melissa Murray has been named interim dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law. Her appointment, which begins today, was decided with broad input from Berkeley Law faculty, students and staff following the March 10 resignation of former Dean Sujit Choudhry.

Murray – a renowned scholar of the legal regulation of sex and sexuality, of marriage equality, and of reproductive rights and justice – joined the Berkeley Law faculty in 2006. She teaches a range of courses including family law, constitutional law and criminal law, and additionally serves as faculty director of Berkeley Law’s Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice.

Murray is a widely respected scholar and teacher, as renowned for the quality of her scholarship as her engagement with students. She will provide excellent leadership at Berkeley Law as we search for a permanent dean, and we will provide her with every form of support.

For more information about Murray, I encourage you to read today’s Berkeley News article on her appointment.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Dirks
Chancellor
