Campus Philanthropic Allocation and Research Administrative Fee

June 27, 2023

Colleagues,

This is to advise you of a change in the campus philanthropic allocation and research administrative fee associated with gifts made to campus. Effective July 1, 2023, the campus philanthropic allocation will increase from 5% to 7.5%.  The research administrative fee will increase from 10.5% to 13%.

The additional 2.5% will help Berkeley address capital renewal, including critical deferred maintenance needed for campus facilities. The remainder of the philanthropic allocation and research administrative fee will be allocated as they currently are, supporting campus wide advancement activities, funding future research and central research administration, and supporting the units benefitting from the gift.

Before arriving at the decision to make this change, Chancellor Christ consulted with the Cabinet, the Council of Deans, the Board of Visitors, the Executive and Finance Committees of the UC Berkeley Foundation, and chief development officers across the campus. The Chair and President of the Berkeley Endowment Management Company were also consulted.

Decisions about how the incremental deferred maintenance funding will be spent will be made by the campus’s Finance Committee, which is composed of the Chancellor, the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Vice Chancellor of Finance/Chief Financial Officer, and the Vice Chancellor of Administration. Funded projects will be carried out by the Vice Chancellor of Administration.

Berkeley has seen several consecutive robust years for fundraising, helping to renew Berkeley’s public mission and world-class excellence for generations to come. By increasing the philanthropic allocation and the research administrative fee, we will tap this strength to impact the critical deferred maintenance needs across campus.
