General Academic Salary Increase Program 2025–26

June 26, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

The academic salary scales for policy-covered academics will be increased by a general range adjustment of 3.2% (subject to rounding where applicable). This adjustment to the academic salary scales will be effective October 1, 2025 for policy-covered faculty and July 1, 2025 for other policy-covered academic appointees.

For senate faculty not yet advanced to above-scale status, this represents a 3.2% increase to the on-scale portion of compensation. Additionally, for most senate faculty (see below for exceptions), we will also increase the off-scale portion of pay by 3.2% (rounded to the nearest $100), also effective October 1, 2025. For above-scale faculty, the Berkeley campus has also decided to provide 3.2% increases (rounded to the nearest $100) effective October 1, 2025. We are also increasing the minimum off-scale increment for Assistant Professors to $24,000 effective October 1, 2025. In addition, the regular peer-review merit advancement process for policy-covered academic appointees will continue per academic personnel policy.

As noted, there are some exceptions, which apply to newly hired faculty or those with recent retention cases:

  • Per long-standing campus practice, this 3.2% increase to pay does not apply to faculty with July 1, 2025 or later appointment dates. Instead, for faculty who fall into this category who have not yet advanced to above scale, when the on-scale salary increases on October 1st, the off-scale portion of pay will be reduced so that the sum of the increased on-scale portion and the reduced off-scale portion equals the salary promised at time of appointment. Two exceptions to this: (i) faculty who are transferring their appointment from another UC campus will receive the 3.2% increase, consistent with long-standing policy and UC rules, and (ii) no newly hired faculty member’s off-scale portion will be reduced below $24,000, the new campus minimum off-scale increment for new hires.

  • Per long-standing campus practice, those faculty who received retention salary increases effective July 1, 2025 will not receive the 3.2% increase. Rather the components of their salary will be adjusted as outlined in the previous bullet. The one exception to this is if the 3.2% increase to the pre-retention salary exceeds the retention salary; in such cases, a faculty member’s salary effective October 1, 2025 will be the pre-retention salary plus a 3.2% increase to the pre-retention salary.

Academic appointees who are represented by our various unions are not included in this program because their wages are governed by collective bargaining agreements.
