Updated Campus Policy on Self-Supporting Graduate Professional Degree Programs (SSGPDP)

March 13, 2018

Dear Campus Community,

We are pleased to announce an updated campus policy on self-supporting graduate professional degree programs (SSGPDPs) which can be found on the Graduate Division website

This policy is based on the recommendations of the Joint Administration-Academic Senate Task Force on Self-Supporting Graduate Professional Degree Programs with input from the Council of Deans and the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate. A summary of the recommendations that informed the policy can be found on pages 3-4 of the Task Force report. The updated campus policy reflects changes in UCOP policy and strives to ensure that SSGPDPs embody our academic rigor while also being financially sound and meeting workforce needs. In particular, we want to bring your attention to these changes:

  • full-time SSGPDPs are allowed;

  • a market study that follows design principles articulated in the Task Force report is required;

  • a new budget template that captures costs and revenues more accurately replaces the UCOP budget template (this template may be refined based on user feedback); and

  • the teaching profile of an SSGPDP is to be determined by the pedagogical needs of the program (Senate faculty oversight and involvement are still required).

 Please forward this information to relevant members of your department. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact Linda Song, Graduate Division’s Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at lhsong@berkeley.edu.

Best regards,

A. Paul Alivisatos
