Announcement: Dean of Berkeley Social Welfare

February 5, 2025

Dear Campus Community,

After a successful national search, we are pleased to announce that Susan Stone has been selected to serve as the new dean of the School of Social Welfare. Professor Stone currently serves as the interim dean of the school and will continue in this role until the permanent dean appointment becomes effective on July 1, 2025.

A respected academic with more than 20 years of experience at Berkeley, Professor Stone will focus on strengthening partnerships with community members and affirming the School’s historic commitment to underserved communities. Professor Stone plans to further elevate the significant research contributions of the faculty and support efforts to translate findings to advance social work programs and practices. She aspires to call attention to the unique role the school plays in contributing to the public impact mission of the university and position Berkeley Social Welfare as the top-ranked social welfare school in the nation.

Professor Stone has excelled in many leadership positions at Berkeley Social Welfare, including as co-chair of the Master of Social Welfare program, chair of the faculty, and associate dean for academic affairs. In these roles, she has played a critical part in advancing the school's academic programs, overseeing accreditation processes and guiding the school through organizational transformation. With deep knowledge of the school and the field of social welfare, a strong leadership track record and a visionary approach to advancing social work education, she is poised to lead the school to even greater achievements.

Professor Stone joined Berkeley Social Welfare in 2001 and is the Catherine Mary and Eileen Clare Hutto Professor of Social Services in Public Education. She received all of her degrees from the University of Chicago: a bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the School of Social Service Administration. She is well known for her leadership in several research-practice partnerships and for her research on the educational arrangements of underserved student subgroups, school-based health and social service delivery systems, and school social work practices. In 2020, she was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare and was subsequently elected to the Academy’s Board in 2023. The research practice partnership that she co-founded with Professor Emily Ozer of the School of Public Health was awarded the Chancellor’s Campus-Community Partnership Award in 2023
