Announcement: Inaugural Associate Provost for Energy, Climate, and Environment (AP-ECE)

April 22, 2026

Dear Campus Community,

Today is Earth Day, which makes it all the more exciting to announce the appointment of Rachel Morello-Frosch as the inaugural Associate Provost for Energy, Climate, and Environment (AP-ECE). In this role, she will work collaboratively across campus and with external partners to promote research excellence, curricular innovation, community-engaged scholarship, and sustainable campus operations aligned with the university’s broader strategic goals to provide long-term societal benefit in the areas of energy, climate, and the environment. She begins her appointment on July 1, 2026.

An environmental health scientist and epidemiologist, Professor Morello-Frosch is jointly appointed in the Rausser College’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management and in the School of Public Health. For over 25 years, her research has examined structural determinants of environmental health and how co-exposures to environmental and social stressors shape health inequities. Much of her work has examined this question in the context of climate change, as well as exposures to air pollution, drinking water contaminants, and other toxic compounds from environmental and consumer product sources. In addition to using community-engaged approaches in her work, she has ensured her research has an impact by engaging with decision-makers in California and nationally to improve policy and advance environmental justice.

Professor Morello-Frosch holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences, M.P.H. Epidemiology/Biostatistics, and B.A. Development Studies  —  all from UC Berkeley.

Please join me in congratulating Rachel on her appointment to this inaugural role.

Sincerely,

Benjamin E. Hermalin
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
