Search Announcement: Chief Campus Counsel - 2018

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for the position of Chief Campus Counsel.

Home to more than 30,000 undergraduates and more than 11,000 graduate students, Berkeley is internationally renowned for excellence and pioneering achievements across all disciplines. At the heart of its preeminence are over 1,500 ladder-rank faculty dispersed among more than 130 academic departments and 80 research units. The campus is supported by nearly 9,000 talented and diverse staff working across 20 different job categories.

This position reports to the UC Berkeley Chancellor and to the systemwide General Counsel. The Chief Campus Counsel is part of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, works collaboratively with the Office of the President, and serves as advisor to the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, and other senior campus leaders. This role has responsibility for responding to the wide range of legal, regulatory, policy, and governance issues that may arise on campus, either by providing advice directly or in consultation with other university attorneys, or by engaging the services of outside counsel. This position also serves as an advisor for the systemwide General Counsel regarding campus legal issues and system legal policy. As UC Berkeley is a high-visibility, forward-thinking, decentralized institution with a rich history and a key role in shaping cultural discourse, the Chief Campus Counsel’s legal role will reflect that complexity and challenge.

We seek a senior attorney who will maintain a significant individual legal portfolio and will lead a small team of legal colleagues and staff. Applicants should have a J.D. from an accredited law school, be a member in good standing of the State Bar of California (or willing to pass the July 2018 bar exam), and have approximately 15 years of complex, high-level legal experience, including experience managing attorneys. This seasoned leader will possess a solid understanding of and demonstrated experience with the range of legal issues affecting major public research universities and experience with providing sophisticated legal advice in a broad range of areas. The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership skills, the highest degree of personal integrity, a strategic and solution-oriented approach, and superior communication skills, political acumen, and judgement.
