Search Announcement: Dean, Division of Social Sciences - 2018

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Dean of the College of Letters and Science, Division of Social Sciences, at Berkeley. The dean is responsible for the administration of the division, reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2019.

Within the College of Letters and Science, the Dean of Social Sciences is responsible for leading the division, advancing its mission and engaging with the campus, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and public. The dean has administrative responsibilities for academic and non-academic personnel, which includes teaching and research and operational budgets, as well as physical facilities and instructional technology for twelve academic departments and related academic personnel administration for fourteen research units and museums. The division has approximately 275 budgeted Full Time Equivalent (FTE) faculty or one fifth of the campus allocation, plus Unit 18 Lecturers, Adjunct faculty, Librarians, professional research and post-doctoral appointments. The division has a permanent budget of approximately $130 million in state and extramural funds. The division teaches one-quarter of the campus' student FTE, and the bulk of the American Cultures breadth requirement for the entire campus.  The overall ranking of several of the departments is in the top five nationally.

The search for a dean will be limited to tenured faculty members within the Berkeley campus. The dean’s primary responsibility is to provide the vision and leadership to maintain and enhance the exceptional stature and impact of the division. The successful candidate will have: (1) a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service to the social sciences profession; (2) a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with faculty, staff and students; (3)  a record of sound administrative accomplishment, especially in the areas of academic budget management, strategic planning, and academic personnel review; (4) a strong and demonstrated commitment to advancing the campus priority of equity and inclusion; (5) the ability to represent, promote, and engage with the broad array of disciplines, programs and cross-disciplinary research in the division; (6) a demonstrated capacity to foster relationships with key supporters (including alumni, government agencies, private foundations, and others) to facilitate effective fundraising; (7) a willingness to collaborate across the campus, as well as nationally and internationally, to support the mission of the division.
