Search Announcement: Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs - 2018

The University of California, Berkeley invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Reporting to the Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost, this position will be a strategic partner in fulfilling the University’s commitment to creating a strong sense of community and enhancing the student experience for our more than 30,000 undergraduate and 11,000 graduate students.

The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs provides strategic leadership and vision to a division of over 1600 staff responsible for “advancing the learning and personal growth of students by providing leadership, services, and opportunities that enable them to succeed in and contribute to a diverse and global society.” This role oversees a diverse and wide-ranging portfolio that includes undergraduate admissions; office of the registrar; financial aid and scholarships; housing, dining, residential programming, childcare services; campus life and leadership, including public service and career services; ASUC Student Union; university health services, including counseling and psychological services, clinical, and social services; and recreational sports. The divisional offices provide administrative and financial services, communications, technical support, and professional development for the staff who are on the frontlines and working hard to create the best student experience possible.

The next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs must be inspired and ready to provide strong and collaborative leadership to the division and work closely with campus leadership and Berkeley’s students, faculty, and staff to deliver responsive and innovative programs and services, ensure financial sustainability for the division, strengthen the connection between academic and student affairs, promote diversity, equity and inclusion, and create an environment for success.

Applicants should have a graduate degree in a related field and at least 10 years of progressive managerial experience in student affairs at a large research university. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated ability to provide strong, values-based leadership, manage the financial affairs of a large, complex student affairs operation, and use knowledge of current issues and trends in student affairs to make innovative program improvements. This seasoned leader will have enthusiasm for working directly with students, exceptional political acumen and communication skills, a passion for diversity and inclusion, and a strong commitment to Berkeley’s mission.

Timeline

The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) search committee members and search firm were selected in early 2018. Stakeholder meetings were held in early March to gather feedback about the skills and qualities that are needed in the next VCSA and about the short and long-term priorities for this role. A stakeholder survey was also circulated widely to collect feedback from the campus community. The search consultants have been conducting preliminary outreach since early 2018 and applications and nominations are currently being accepted. The aim is to have the next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in place by the beginning of Fall 2018.
