Update on the progress toward developing Berkeley’s new strategic plan

Over the past year the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the ASUC student leaders, and VC Finance’s Office of Planning and Analysis (OPA) have been collaborating on ways to better equip students with information that allows them to provide contextual data about their Berkeley grade point averages (GPA) to prospective employers and graduate schools.

Updates on Berkeley’s active engagement with the burgeoning and exciting field of data science, which has the potential to shape numerous fields of study and practice.

Jim Knowlton has agreed to become the next Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of California, Berkeley.

In spring 2019 Berkeley will inaugurate a Faculty Leadership Academy. This program is designed for tenured Berkeley faculty who are interested in developing skills and knowledge for leadership on the Berkeley campus.

Now that external consultants have finished their detailed review of our intercollegiate athletics program and submitted a number of valuable findings and recommendations, I am writing to provide an update to the Berkeley campus and alumni communities on my plans and intentions.

UC Berkeley has entered into a Resolution Agreement with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR). For the last four years, OCR has been reviewing the campus’s handling of sexual violence and sexual harassment cases. This agreement brings the investigation to a close.

In this environment, I believe that we must collectively establish a cohesive, well-reasoned, and ambitious vision of what our university should be in order to properly set institutional priorities and determine campus investments.

Between February and April 16, 2018, we are rolling out the two-step verification requirement for faculty and staff accounts using a cohort enrollment model.

We write to you today deeply concerned about recent reports of raids being planned by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to arrest undocumented individuals in Northern California. We know that this is causing a great deal of anxiety among people in our campus community who may be affected by these actions.

The terms of the Major Events policy that governs planning for and presentation of Major Events sponsored by Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and other non-departmental users have been finalized.

The campus Free Speech Commission will be holding its first public hearing on Friday, January 19 from 10:30 am to 12 noon in the ASUC Senate Chambers (fifth floor of Eshleman Hall). The Commission invites faculty, staff, and students to share their experiences of free speech-related events last September and their thoughts about how best to minimize the impact of future events without compromising free speech or public safety.

Stefano Bertozzi has announced that he will be stepping down as Dean of the School of Public Health (SPH) and rejoining the faculty full-time July 1, 2018.  An interim dean will be appointed to lead SPH while we conduct a search for Dean Bertozzi’s successor.
